Why Oolong Tea Need Vacuum Packing?
Mar 28, 2025Oolong tea is vacuum packed mainly to delay the oxidation of tea leaves, maintain quality and extend the shelf life. The specific reasons are as follows:
1. Inhibit oxidation reaction
- Oolong tea is a semi-fermented tea, and its flavor is between green tea (unfermented) and black tea (fully fermented). The active ingredients such as polyphenol oxidase remaining in the tea leaves will continue to oxidize when exposed to oxygen, causing the tea taste to fade and the aroma to dissipate. Oolong Vacuum packaging can effectively isolate oxygen and slow down this process.
2. Prevent aroma from volatilizing
- The unique floral and fruity aromas of oolong tea (such as the "orchid aroma" of Tieguanyin and the "peach aroma" of Phoenix Dancong) come from volatile aromatic substances. The vacuum environment can reduce the loss of aroma and ensure a rich flavor when brewing.
3. Moisture-proof and mildew-proof
- Tea leaves are prone to moisture absorption and moisture, especially in high temperature and high humidity environments. Vacuum packaging blocks moisture in the air to prevent tea leaves from getting damp and deteriorating.
4. Block odor and pollution
- The porous structure of tea leaves easily absorbs surrounding odors (such as kitchen fumes, cosmetic odors, etc.), and vacuum sealing can protect tea leaves from environmental odor pollution.
5. Extend the shelf life
The shelf life of ordinary packaged oolong tea is usually 1-2 years, while vacuum packaging can extend the shelf life to 2-3 years while maintaining good color, aroma and taste.
Supplementary explanation:
Exceptions to some oolong teas: Traditional strong-flavored oolong teas (such as Wuyi Rock Tea and Laocong Narcissus) are sometimes packaged in air-permeable pottery or kraft paper to promote later aging, but the storage environment must be strictly controlled (dry, light-proof, and odor-free).
Limitations of vacuum packaging: Tea leaves are fragile after vacuum packaging, so high-end oolong tea may also be packaged in nitrogen (also isolates oxygen, but avoids squeezing tea leaves).
Usage suggestions:
- Drink as soon as possible after opening, or transfer to a well-sealed tea can to avoid repeated contact with air.
- If the vacuum-packed tea bags are bulging, it may have leaked and deteriorated, so check carefully.
Through vacuum packaging, the freshness and unique flavor of oolong tea can be preserved to the greatest extent, especially suitable for lightly fermented and highly fragrant varieties (such as light-fragrant Tieguanyin, Taiwan high mountain oolong, etc.).
Our company provides oolong tea vacuum packaging machines from small bags to large packages. We can provide manual equipment and fully automatic equipment, as well as fully automatic feeding and packaging equipment, which ensures the quality of tea, the hygiene of production, and also saves labor.
